So, you’ve chosen a fabric and you’ve found a curtain-maker. Now comes the daunting bit. Getting your curtain measurements right is key to making your curtains sing. Before you begin, consider the following:
- Pole or a track?
- Headings: pencil pleat, pinch pleat, ruffle top…. (there’s a whole other blog here I fear)
- Length: below the sill or puddled on the floor?
Measuring the Width
Measure the full width of the pole or track, not just the window itself. Curtains should extend beyond the window on either side to allow maximum light when open and create a fuller look.
As a guide, allow around 15–30 cm either side of the window.
Measuring the Drop
The drop is the length from the top of the pole or track down to where you want the curtains to finish.
Measure the drop in several places across the window, especially in older houses where floors and ceilings may not be level. Use the longest measurement to avoid curtains sitting too short.
Final Tip
Measure twice, but once. And if all else fails, you can always move the curtain pole….
